Medco Power Indonesia Strengthens Batam–Bintan Power Reliability with 39 MW Capacity Addition

Medco Power Indonesia has officially commenced commercial operations of its 39 MW Add-On Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) in Tanjung Uncang, Batam, on 8 November 2025. This marks a strategic milestone for the company in strengthening energy reliability for the Batam–Bintan electricity system.

The project was developed by Medco Power’s subsidiary, PT Energi Listrik Batam (ELB), under a long-term power purchase agreement with PT PLN Batam. By converting an existing 70 MW open-cycle facility into a combined cycle power plant with a total capacity of 109 MW, MedcoEnergi delivers a significant improvement in operational efficiency.

Through the utilization of waste heat from the gas turbine to generate additional electricity via a steam turbine, the plant successfully reduced its carbon intensity from 0.8 to 0.4 tons of CO₂ per MWh. Beyond enhancing energy efficiency, this upgrade also reinforces the reliability of the power system to support continued industrial growth in Batam and Bintan.

President Director & CEO of Medco Power Indonesia, Bapak Eka Satria, emphasized that the Add-On CCPP project demonstrates the company’s concrete commitment to improving efficiency and ensuring reliable power supply. “By generating more electricity from the same energy source, we can enhance overall performance while reducing carbon intensity. This initiative aligns with Medco Power’s focus on optimizing existing assets to meet rising electricity demand,” he stated.

Director & Chief Executive Officer, Bapak Roberto Lorato, added that the plant’s operation reflects the company’s commitment to building an efficient and low-carbon power portfolio. “This project supports national energy reliability while strengthening our contribution to sustainable development in Indonesia,” he said.

The Add-On CCPP project also recorded more than 2.7 million safe man-hours without lost time incidents, underscoring Medco Power’s strong safety standards throughout development and operations.
