Bamboo, long considered an ordinary plant, has now become a source of new opportunities for residents of Tenayan Industri Village, Pekanbaru City. The Medco Foundation, together with PT Medco Ratch Power Riau (MRPR), a subsidiary of PT Medco Power Indonesia that operates the 275 MW Riau PLTGU, held a training program on bamboo cultivation and utilization.
A total of 20 enthusiastic participants attended every session, from how to plant and care for bamboo, to selecting quality materials, and processing them into a variety of valuable products. Tables, chairs, ladders, gazebos, and even traditional woven crafts were all made directly by the participants under the guidance of experienced instructors.
The training not only provided technical skills but also opened the residents’ eyes to how bamboo can be a sustainable and environmentally friendly source of income. Every discussion and practical session was filled with a spirit of learning, questions, and the sharing of ideas.
COO of Medco Power Indonesia, Bapak Imron Gazali, stated that this initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to contribute to community empowerment in its operational areas. “We believe that our presence in the community is not only to provide a reliable electricity supply but also to strengthen the local economy and families through sustainable and environmentally friendly programs,” he said.
It is hoped that this spirit will continue to grow and develop, giving birth to more local initiatives that can improve the welfare of residents. The skills gained by the participants can be the beginning of creative bamboo-based businesses, creating new job opportunities and ultimately improving the welfare of residents in the company’s operational areas.
