Towards a Self-Reliant and Sustainable Indonesia through Clean Energy

In an interview with CNBC Indonesia, President Director of Medco Power Indonesia, Bapak Eka Satria, expressed optimism regarding the government’s efforts to accelerate the development of renewable energy (EBT) as outlined in the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).

However, Bapak Eka emphasized that the transition from coal-based steam power plants (PLTU) to renewable energy must address three key aspects: availability, affordability, and sustainability. “Renewable energy cannot thrive without a robust and well-developed network and infrastructure,” stated Bapak Eka Satria.

He also highlighted three major areas of focus required to accelerate this transition: Market and regulatory reform, to create a more level playing field between renewable and fossil-based energy, including subsidies. Strengthening electricity grid infrastructure to support the distribution of renewable energy. Investment and technological support, including fiscal incentives and streamlined permitting processes.

The economic potential of this transition is also significant. According to Mr. Eka, the green sector is projected to create up to 1.7 million jobs and contribute approximately USD 300 billion to the national economy.

This transition, he continued, is not the sole responsibility of the government—private sector involvement is crucial. Cross-sector collaboration is essential to ensure that renewable energy becomes the backbone of Indonesia’s future energy system.
