The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, officially inaugurated the commercial operations of two renewable energy projects: the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in Bondowoso, East Java, and the East Bali Solar Power Plant (PLTS) in Karangasem, Bali. Both plants are developed by PT Medco Power Indonesia and contribute to the national electricity grid and Indonesia’s renewable energy targets.
The inauguration, conducted in a hybrid format, was part of a national ceremony to launch renewable energy projects in 15 provinces, as well as enhanced oil production at the Cepu Block. The event was attended by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bapak Bahlil Lahadalia, Governor of East Java, Ibu Khofifah Indar Parawansa, MedcoEnergi President Director, Bapak Hilmi Panigoro, PLN President Director, Bapak Darmawan Prasodjo, and representatives from central and regional government institutions, held in Blawan Ijen, Bondowoso, East Java, on Thursday (26/6/2025).
The Ijen Geothermal Power Plant, operated by PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal – a joint venture between Medco Power Indonesia and Ormat Technologies Inc.- is the first geothermal project in East Java. Its first unit has a capacity of 35 MW and can provide clean electricity for more than 85,000 households. Meanwhile, the East Bali Solar Power Plant, now the largest utility-scale solar plant in Bali, was developed by PT Medcosolar Bali Timur, a collaboration between Medco Power and Solar Philippines. With a capacity of 25 MWp, the plant is expected to generate approximately 50 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power around 42,000 homes. The Ijen Geothermal Plant is projected to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 230,000 tons annually, while the East Bali Solar Plant is estimated to cut more than 44,000 tons of CO₂ per year.
President Prabowo expressed appreciation for the commissioning of the Ijen and East Bali power plants and other geothermal projects, emphasizing their importance in realizing national energy independence. “The operation of Ijen and East Bali power plants is proof that Indonesia is moving toward self-reliance. We will stand on our own feet and provide efficient, economical energy for all Indonesians,” said the President.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bapak Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the newly inaugurated renewable energy projects across 15 provinces, have a combined capacity of 379.7 megawatts with a total investment value of approximately IDR 25 trillion. “These projects will drive local industry growth with a domestic content level (TKDN) of up to 40 percent and will create over 9,500 jobs nationally, including 1,404 in Ijen,” Bahlil explained.
Meanwhile, Bapak Hilmi Panigoro emphasized that the achievement of these two projects reflects the company’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s energy transition. “We are proud to contribute to the national renewable energy targets through these initiatives. Cross-sector collaboration is key to delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy for Indonesia,” he said.
Bapak Eka Satria, President Director of Medco Power, added, “Integrating the Ijen Geothermal and East Bali Solar Power Plants into the Java-Bali electricity grid will enhance energy reliability and sustainability for communities and economic activities in the region. Medco Power remains committed to supporting the government in developing more renewable power projects across Indonesia.”
