PT MEDCO POWER INDONESIA COMMENCING THE CONSTRUCTION OF 39 MW ADD-ON COMBINED CYCLE POWER PLANT (ENERGY CONSERVATION PROJECT) IN TANJUNG UNCANG, BATAM

Batam, 24 November 2023 – PT Medco Power Indonesia (“MedcoPower”), through its subsidiary PT Energi Listrik Batam (“ELB”), held a groundbreaking ceremony for a construction of a Combined-Cycle Power Plant (CCPP), at Tanjung Uncang, Batam (the “Project”). The Project will convert the existing 70 MW Simple Cycle Power Plant (SCPP) into a 109 MW Add-On Combined-Cycle Power Plant. The groundbreaking ceremony is attended by representatives of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) (PLN), PT PLN Batam (PLN Batam), PT Inti Karya Persada Tehnik (IKPT) and PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI).

The Project not only will increase the plant capacity, but also improve its efficiency through the utilization of SCPP exhaust waste heat as fuel for additional steam turbine generator and significantly reduce the cost of electricity generation of the plant. The Project is supported by BSI through a sharia project financing and IKPT as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor. The Project is planned to complete within 24 months with a target of its COD (commercial operation date) by third quarter of 2025.

Director of Technical and Enviromental Electrical of Directorate General of Electricity of Ministry Energy and Mineral Resources, Mohammad Priharto Dwinugroho mentioned, “We wish for an acceleration in development of ELB Add-On CCPP Project to accomplish a reliable electric power supply for a better electicity supply system in Batam and to continue growth of new investment in business and industrial sector in Batam”.

The Representative of Director of Generation Management PT PLN Persero, Suwarno said, “The Project brings at least 3 benefits; firstly, the increment of net capacity from 2 x 35MW into 109MW; secondly, in general the electricity generation cost decreases since the electricity produced without component C (fuel); and thirdly, emission reduction of CO2”. He also mentioned, ”the Project will help to improve Batam-Bintan grid system, including anticipating the intermittent supply from renewables. We hope that this collaboration between PLN, Medco Power, PLN Batam and ELB can continue harmoniously”.

President Director of Medco Power, Eka Satria mentioned, “The implementation of the Add-On CCPP Project demonstrates MedcoPower’s continued commitment in providing clean energy supply for Batam-Bintan grid system and also in energy transition through energy conservation project, in supporting the Government’s program to achieve Net Zero Emission target by 2060”.
